Helping the Quilpie community clean up the floods

CityRay sweeper clearing floodwater from Quilpie airport runway

Quilpie Shire Council recently faced serious flood conditions that disrupted the town and challenged essential operations, particularly at the local airport runway where water pooling threatened aircraft safety. Months prior, Mike Trace Engineering (MTE) had delivered a CityRay road sweeper to the council — equipment that became crucial during the emergency.

The CityRay sweeper, typically used to remove dirt and debris from roads, demonstrated remarkable versatility by vacuuming standing water from the runway, enabling safe aircraft operations when "highways can be cut off by floodwaters for days at a time."

For isolated communities, airport runways serve as critical lifelines for emergency supplies and evacuations. By maintaining runway operability during the flood, Quilpie's team helped preserve this vital connection and prevented potential service disruptions.

The council's recent acquisition and operator training proved fortuitous. This partnership between local government and equipment suppliers exemplifies proactive disaster preparedness. MTE emphasised that appropriate equipment and strong community partnerships enable effective emergency response, particularly in Australia's remote, weather-prone regions.
